It has been calculated that more than 50,000 patients in the United States will present each year with liver metastases from colorectal cancers. The liver is often the only site of metastases, and it has been estimated that up to 38% of patients who die of colorectal metastatic cancer do son with the liver being the only site of metastases. Unfortunately, in the majority of patients when metastases are diagnosed, they are multiple and bilobar. However, approximately 10,000 patients per year may have resectable hepatic metastases at diagnosis. In well selected cases, the five-year survival rate for theses patients may be op to 25%. Thus, it is reassuring to consider that as many as 2,500 patients with metastasic disease to the liver may be cured by surgical intervention.
