Resumen

Objective: To report on the results of the first stage of the Pause for Your Health program, designed to promote physical exercise during the workday, coupled with an eating plan to contribute to employees’ general well-being. Material and methods: This is a descriptive, test-post-test study with a single group, selected through non-probabilistic, intentional sampling. Thirty-six employees from the research area of a national health institute participated (10 men and 26 women). The indicators evaluated before and after the program was implemented were: sedentary lifestyle, proof of cardiovascular adaptation to exercise, anthropometric measures, serumlypoglucemic profile, blood pressure, perception of lifestyle and general well-being and opinion of the program. Results: The data from the study showed significant changes in five of the anthropometric indicators evaluated, the most important of which was waist circumference. The most noticeable change in clinical evaluations occurred at the glucose level. It was also found that persons who were overweight at the start of the program underwent statistically significant changes. Conclusions: The program produced an attitude of greater involvement regarding physical activity as well as a heightened awareness of proper eating habits. One of the immediate benefits of using this program was identifying risk factors among the personnel in these areas which encouraged their participation and enabled employees to take specific measures regarding their health care.
