Resumen

Context: The retinal detachment (RD) is a disorder characterized by the separation between the neural retina and retinal pigment epithelium. From January to October 2013, the Brazilian National Institute of Social Security recognized 3,540 cases of work incapacity due to retinal detachments and defects. Ceased postoperative recovery, there is no medical consensus on whether or not the employee can return to manual labor activity. Objective: To study if weight lifting and/or return to manual labor activities can be considered risk factors for a new retinal detachment. Methods: It was performed electronic search of the Medline and Lilacs database between June 03, 2013 and June 07, 2013, and it was also done a research in classical textbooks of ophthalmology. Results: Among the articles found, only one associates physical stress to retinal detachment. Conclusion: There is no substantial evidence attesting to the need for permanent removal of RD operated patients from manual labor activities, since most studies published to date do not consider weight lifting and/or return to physical activity stress as a risk for retinal detachment or re-detachment factors.
