Carcinoma of the uterine cervix is symbolic of the potential and the problems of modern oncology. It is one of the most common malignancies of the developing world and the problems of modern oncology. It is one of the most common malignancies of the developing world and yet most of the research is done in developed countries. The epidemiology is well understood and indeed personal behavior has an important role in evolution; yet the bahavioral aspects are little studied and even more poorly understood.1 The laboratory science of cervical cancer, particularly immunologic and molecular biologic is among the most advanced of any malignancies and yet there are few clinical trials with emphasis placed on lthis elegant body of work. The prevention of advanced cervical cancer is established with a screening process and curable therapy for early disease. Yet the application of effective screening, i.e. a generally applied with repetitive accuracy translating to effective therapy remains elusive for the majority of susceptible women, usually related to non-medical factors. Therefore there remains a need, hopefully temporary, for continued use and improvement of systemic therapies.
