Graduate education has become an integral and leading component of medical science and scientific education across the globe. For the biomedical sciences, this has evolved considerably in the past century and decades. In the United States, Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 as an entirely new university based on graduate research –the first research university in the United States, conceived and devoted specifically to a science and research base for general education. It helped extend the tradition in the US that teaching and research are not separate endeavors; that success in one depends on success in the other. This borrowed from the rich traditions in Europe in many countries and paralleled some other new colleges throughout the America’s.
