Introduction Selected groups of malnourished patients in need of major colorectal operations have increased morbidity and mortality when compared to normally nourished individuals who requiere similar procedures (Hickmam, 1980). Moreover, the use of perioperative nutrition in selected colorectal surgical patients may reduce morbidity. Most colorectal surgical patients in nedd of perioperative nutritional support have adverse sequelae due to either cancer of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This presentation reviews the following with particular emphasis upon the patient in need of colorectal surgery: 1. Nutritional assesment and general indications for perioperative enteral and parental feeding; 2. General guidelines for administration and delivery of feedings; 3. Perioperative nutrition in surgical patients with colorectal cancer; or IBD and, 4. Early oral feeding after elective colorectal surgery.
