Pelvic exenteration in an established procedure in the armamentariun of the surgical oncologist. Developed in the 1940´s for the palleative treatment of locally advanced carcinoma of the uterine cervix, the procedure was refined in the 1960´s, experienced was gained in the 1970´s and during the last decade, considerable experience has been published making this operation a sound surgical investment for highly selected patients with tumors confined to the pelvic viscera. Pelvic exenteration consists of an “en bloc” resection of portions or all of the rectum, distal colon, bladder, lower segments of the ureters, all internal reproductive organs, portions of the perineum, the draining pelvic lymph nodes, and the pelvic peritoneum.
