Endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer in Japan The leading cause of death in Japan is cancer, after lung cancer, gastric cancer causes more deaths than any other form of cancer. for this reason, the gastric mass survey was begun about 40 years ago. The death rate decreased due to early diagnosis and treatment and the gastric mass survey found the rate of early gastric cancer to be about 70%. The spread of egd (esophagogastro-duodenoscopy) and the progress of diagnosis are necessary for early diagnosis. In endoscopic diagnosis of gastric cancer, we have been carrying out conventional observation, the dye-spraying method with indigo-carmine, endoscopic ultrasonography(eus), and biopsy. in our cancer center, we have examined about 4500 cases using egd, and about 400 cases using eus a year. We have diagnosed the lesion and the depth of cancer invasion from form size, hardness, and by observation from different angles, and different air strengths. in addition, we speculated on the histological type. We have diagnosed the depth of cancer invasion and the depth of ulceration by using eus.
