Fighting blindness worldwide and promoting peaceful cooperation among nations through education and the sharing of knowledge is the focus of ORBIS. A non-profit, humanitarian organization, ORBIS conducts health education programs and hands-on training f or ophthalmologists, nurses, biomedical technicians and health care workers throughout the developing world. Programs take place inside the ORBIS DC- 10 eye surgery hospital and off the plane in local hospitals and other conference facilities. Since its founding in 1982, ORBIS has conducted more than 330 training programs in 77 countries around the world. More than 35,000 health care professionals have been trained and ORBIS doctors have saved or restored the sight of more than 22,000 patients. Many Ambassadors, Heads of State, Ministers of Health and other government officials around the world have expressed their admiration and support for ORBIS's programs and its active diplomatic role. Funds for the $16 million annual budget come from a variety sources including gifts, grants and gifts-in-kind from major corporations, foundations, government agencies and individuals around the world.
