Hiponatremia is a frequent metabolic disorder encountered in hospitalized patients and it's associated with an increase in morbimortality. Hiponatremia is frequently seen in patients with lesions in the central nervous system and is often attributed to inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. A number of studies in recently years have shown that hiponatremia in many patient with intracranial disease may actually be caused by cerebral salt wasting, in which a renal loss of sodium leads to hiponatremia and a decrease in extracellular fluid volume.
