The idea of building a children’s hospital in Mexico started in 1933, thanks to the efforts of the Mexican Society of Pediatrics, which was headed by Dr. Federico Gómez Santos, founder of the Mexican School of Pediatrics, with the support of President Abelardo Rodríguez. The Hospital was built on a field used for growing vegetables south of the Hospital General de México, and because of the marshy conditions of the terrain and poor knowledge of soil mechanics, the construction lasted ten years and required the political intervention of Presidents Lazaro Cárdenas and Manuel Avila Camacho. Finally, on April 30, 1943, the Hospital was inaugurated with 550 beds and the best technology available at the time. We quote a paragraph from the inaugural speech of Dr. Federico Gómez: “We celebrate today the most awaited inauguration of the Children’s Hospital of Mexico, since we are in front of the crystallized idea. Now is the turn for us, the physicians and medical personnel, to collaborate in the Institution, make it walk, grow and earn respect, providing Mexican children with the best and most efficient service in any country on Earth. The idea is ambitious but doable, and we will make it. Our target will be to transform this Hospital into an Institution with three main functions: an excellent service to the society, a good soil for teaching and a fruitful ambiance for research in pediatric diseases....”
