The Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias Ismael Cosío Villegas (INER), was born in 1936 under the name of Huipulco Sanatorium for Tuberculosis, after years of intermittent construction and decades of delays in implementing the international movement of sanatoria. Tuberculosis (TB), the white plague, was whipping Mexico as the majority of countries, and a suitable place for patients and the personnel with vocation to take care of them was required. Its founder, Dr. Donato G. Alarcón Martínez, laid the foundation of respiratory care in Mexico, in Huipulco. He became the first president of the National Committee for Combating Tuberculosis, pioneer non-government organization collecting funds with tuberculosis stamps. Dr. Alarcón was also the first president of the Mexican Society of Tuberculosis, now the Mexican Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery and the first editor of this magazine still in circulation. According to the global trend with the reduction in the hospitalization of tuberculosis and the increased frequency of other respiratory diseases in 1969 the sanatorium was renamed as the Huipulco Hospital for Lung Diseases. With the need to develop systematic research and teaching in addition to medical assistance, present since its foundation, it was established in 1975, the National Lung Institute and in 1982 acquired its current status and the name of “Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Respiratorias”.
