The Instituto Nacional de Cardiología was inaugurated on April 18, 1944, in a building located on the corner of the Calzada de la Piedad and the Dr. Márquez street, culminating the efforts made by Dr. Ignacio Chávez, who, in 1927, had opened the Cardiology Service at the General Hospital of Mexico City. The Inaugural Ceremony was headed by the, in turn, President of Mexico, General Manuel Ávila Camacho, and the Secretary of Health and Assistance, Dr. Gustavo Baz. In his opening speech, Dr. Chávez accepted the commitment acquired by law, and according to his collaborators, stated that “if in the future this is a center of studies and work; if the research performed herein increases somewhat the science and the prestige of Mexico; if the patients that come here, find in this house a warm oasis of peace, where the human being reaches out to another human being; if the coat of arms that we assigned ourselves serves as fulfilled oath, and love and science are truly placed to the service of the heart. I will die in peace”. Dr. Ignacio Chávez surrounded himself of an outstanding team of physicians, some of them studied in Europe or the USA, among them Drs. Manuel Vaquero, Salvador Aceves, Jose Manuel Rivero Carballo, Alfonso de Gortarí, Tomas G. Perrín, Mario Salazar Mallen, Ignacio González Guzmán, Issac Costero, Arturo Rosenblueth, José F. Rulfo, Nicandro Chávez, Demetrio Sodi Pallares, and Narno Dorbecker, who were in charge of heading the departments and laboratories of the recently created Institute.
