McGraw-Hill recently published the second edition of Sleep Disorders, which is an update to the first edition published in 2000. The text includes thorough reviews of basic aspects of sleep and provides a detailed review of diagnostic and therapeutic information. The book is edited by a distinguished, interdisciplinary group of specialists who have been involved in the development of the specialty in Sleep Medicine since the 1980’s. The book contains 32 chapters. The first chapter provides a unique perspective of the development of Sleep Medicine in Mexico. The chapter documents the chronology and leadership of the various sleep laboratories and clinics in Mexico fro m early stages of the specialty up until recent times. Five chapters deal with basic aspects of sleep; neuro-anatomy, neuro-physiology, neuro-chemistry, basic aspects of chronobiology and basic cortical changes secondary to sleep deprivation are reviewed by senior researchers with well-known track records in their respective areas of interest who have been leading their laboratories at renowned research institutions in Mexico for a number of years.
