In the 1940’s, in the Mexico City Hospital Juarez the Department of Neurosurgery was divided into three areas led by Dr. Miguel Lavalle, Joachim Maas and Manuel Velasco Suarez. Their joint efforts culminated in the signing of a presidential decree under the administration of Miguel Alemán Valdés that would lead to the creation of the National Institute of Neurology of Mexico. At the beginning of the 20th century there was a large estate in the southern part of the city called Hacienda de San Juan de Dios in Tlalpan. The land was owned by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOH) and in 1963 some of it was assigned to build the National Institute of Neurology. The institute was inaugurated by President Adolfo Lopez Mateos on the 28th of February, 1964 in a 40,000 m2 property.
