Resumen

Objective: Study the frequency of emotional, physical and psychiatric disorders in informal primary caregivers (IPC) related to the experience of being the caregiver of a relative with schizophrenia in Mexico, since knowledge of these aspects may contribute to patients’ well-being and therefore to better management of the disease and its evolution. Methods: Expost-facto, cross-sectional, correlational, descriptive study of a non-probabilistic, circumstantial sample, 131 IPCs. Instruments. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview version 1.0 (CIDI); Social Behaviour Assessment Schedule 2nd ed. (SBAS). Results. The IPCs reported some physical diseases (48%) and emotional disorders (74%) related to having a relative with schizophrenia. A diagnosis of psychiatric disorders showed that 58% displayed 1 to 4 diagnoses: depressive disorders (20.6%), alcohol disorders (9.9%) and disassociative disorders (7.6%). Conclusions: The variables associated with IPC disorders included the presence of symptomatic behavior in the patient, the number of years of evolution of the disease and the number of hospitalizations, r = 0.38; p > 0.000.
