Resumen

Background: The analysis of clinical and occupational profiles and results of patch tests improve the care of patients with suspected contact dermatitis. Objectives: To define the clinical-occupational and results of patch tests of patients in the Outpatient Occupational Medicine, State University of Campinas (SP) with suspected oc¬cupational contact dermatitis. To define the clinical and occupational profiles and the results of patch tests of patients attending at the Clinic of Occupational Medicine at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (SP) with suspected occupational contact dermatitis. Methods: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional retrospective analysis of 180 charts of patients treated between 1/1/1999 and 12/31/2008. Results: Most patients are aged between 35 and 50 years old, white, woman, referring to the onset of symptoms in hands. Nickel sulfate, cobalt chloride, potassium dichromate, carba mix, thiuram and thimerosol mix showed the highest levels of sensitization. The frequency of tests with three or more positive reactions was 68%. Discussion: The clinical and occupational characteristics and rates of sensitization are similar to those reported in the literature, but the frequency of tests with three or more positive reactions is five times higher. This difference can be explained by a selection bias, because that most of the patients was referred by the departments of dermatology and immunology to define the causal relationship, or by a classification bias, because the sensitivities were not confirmed. Conclusions: The occupational and clinical profiles and results of patch tests have been defined but should be interpreted with reservation, since the tests were not repeated when three or more positive reactions were observed. In the area of occupational health, to confirm the sensitization and the relevance with the clinic and the work allows the physician to guide both the employee and the employer in relation to protective measures.
