The practice of occupational rehabilitation must be a dynamic process of global care to the employee to reduce the difficulties of rehabilitated people in the reinsertion in the labor market. The study was conducted to better understand the issue of vocational rehabilitation, understanding the employees rehabilitated perception by Social Security in an university hospital and to analyze the process of return to work .Through a qualitative approach, with semi-structured interviews, using Bardin content analysis, six categories were verified: the meaning of work and hospital work; the meaning of non-work; the via crucis in Social Security; the meaning of being rehabilitated; the difficulties in (of) return to work; and expectations for the research future. Participants were employees rehabilitated by Social Security during the years 2009 and 2010. All staff said they liked their work and are happy with the work at the hospital, particularly in Porto Alegre Clinics Hospital. In the majority of cases, non-work caused suffering psychic, creating experienced prejudice, difficulties in Social Security and in the return to work. “Being rehabilitated” reached not only the bodies of workers, but the identity, self-esteem, self-confidence and security in future. The reports showed discouragement periods, confusion and suffering during the long period away from work. The workers’ health, including vocational rehabilitation, is still a legal and constitutional right to be conquered in practice. All parties involved in rehabilitation–Social Security, companies with their directors, managers and coworkers, as well the rehabilitated people –need to review their actions for the rehabilitation be positive.
