Resumen

This is a prospective study of case-control study carried out at a tertiary level hospital that included 72 patients with bacteriologically confirmed diagnoses of recurrent pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and 201 healthy controls. The SF-12 Questionnaire on quality of life related to health (a reduced version of the SF-36 Health Questionnaire) was used to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of the patients at the onset of a strictly supervised short-course treatment regimen (DOTS). TB patients had significantly lower mean scores than controls for overall quality of life: 51.1 (±SD 22.6) vs. 75.9 (±SD 17.6; p < 0.0001), with the physical and psychological domains being those most severely affected. Results show that patients with active TB experience both difficulties in performing everyday activities and alterations in their psychological states.
