The development of organ transplant models is a wonder –a wonder with no appropriate adjective– that has revolutionized the practice of contemporary medicine. If we attempt to understand what led transplant pioneers to focus their efforts on what clearly seemed an absurd venture, we would probably uncover huge doses of scientific curiosity, frustration due to their inability to solve serious health problems and above all, an indomitable tenacity. Initial successes were witnessed –certainly accompanied by a no lesser number of failures– and the plausibility of organ transplantation was established, the dream of chimeras could be discerned as a reality. Subsequently, a long period of consolidation began –so long, that it may still not have ended– whereby worldwide pioneers had to demonstrate that different transplant models were not only possible but also reproducible and universally applicable.
