INTRODUCTION The need for practical clinical guidelines Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is one of the main causes of death and the chief cause of disability in individuals over age 50. Ten percent (5.7 of 56 million) of deaths in 2001 were attributed to CVD, placing this pathological entity as the second cause of world wide death in general. Eighty six percent of these deaths (4.6 million) occurred in developing countries such as Mexico. The incidence (16 million) and prevalence (67 million) of CVD is high and if we lacked world wide preventive interventions, these numbers would increase 44 and 15% respectively, by the year 2030. According to data obtained from the National Health Information System (SINAIS) in Mexico, CVD is the fourth cause of death in males and the third cause of death in women, with a respective incidence of 26.7 and 28.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. 3 One percent (43,801) of all discharges from public hospitals in our country in 2007 (4,922,227), were attributed to CVD.
