INTRODUCTION With a global wide prevalence of a billion persons, arterial hypertension (AHT) is undoubtedly the most important vascular risk factor. The cumulative risk of developing AHT increases after age 55, reaching 90% as the population ages. In Mexico, according to the Encuesta Nacional en Salud 2000 (ENSA) (National Health Survey 2000) and the Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición 2006 (ENSANUT) (National Health and Nutrition Survey 2006), the prevalence of HT in the adult Mexican population is 30.7% (15 million persons). The National Mexican Registry on cerebrovascular disease (RENAMEVASC, n = 2000) and the First Mexican Registry on Cerebral Ischemia (PREMIER, n-1376), documented a frequency of AHT of 59% and 65% respectively (unpublished data); these frequencies almost duplicate the population prevalence of AHT in Mexico.
