Nutrition and diabetes in the elderly

Autores: Ruiz Arregui Liliana, Pérez Lizaur Ana Bertha

Resumen

The aging process leads to multiple body changes as well as in the individual’s surroundings. These modifications render disease presentation, diagnosis and treatment different than in the rest of the population. This also leads to the need of coordinating a multidisciplinary team, in which the elderly diabetic patient and the caretaker and/or relative must be active participants. The success of preventive and therapeutic measures, hinges on the knowledge of the patient’s health and life conditions (economic, social, community, family, etc.) as well as that of the elderly population in general. Furthermore, the patient must obtain the information and the means available to understand his disease as well as the available resources for treatment; he should also be made aware of his importance in achieving the therapeutic objectives. This is particularly relevant in the management of nutrition in diabetes, since the objective is to change the patient’s nutritional habits and customs as well as the physical activity patterns that he has followed throughout the years.
