Diabetic neuropathy is the third most common complication of diabetes mellitus. When neuropathy is accompanied by pain, it requires specific treatment. In the elderly patient, pain has an enormous impact on quality of life, as it is associated with anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, thus directly impacting the patient’s functionality. Likewise, there are a number of changes in the central and peripheral nervous system that contribute to the chronicity of this painful process, and eventually affect and impact the quality of life of elderly patients. It is fundamental to initiate treatment, know and understand all aspects related to drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics that are also modified with aging, and hence select the best drug for each patient.
